What are etch primers
Guides & Tips

Some etch primers contain low levels of phosphoric acid which is used to etch the surface of the metal to improve the adhesion. CRC Etch It – Etch Primer, however, contains acetone, toluene, and LPG which help to perform the same role.

What can etch primer be used for?

Etch primers are intended for use as primers on new or relatively sound ferrous and non-ferrous metal surfaces as listed above.

Features and benefits of Etch It – Etch Primer

  • Provides adhesion for painting aluminium, stainless steel, brass, copper and galvanised iron
  • Tough durable film
  • Fast drying
  • Compatible with most standard decorative paint systems for metals
  • Effective on clean metals
  • Ready to Use Aerosol – No additional mixing or chemical additives are required. Easy application. No clean-up.
  • MPI Approved C23

What sort of surfaces can etch primer be used on?

CRC Etch It is formulated for use on all bare white and yellow metal surfaces including aluminium, stainless steel, brass, copper and galvanised metals.

While not all etch primers are suitable for use in coastal environments, CRC Etch It can be used for marine applications on boats, marine fittings, aluminium masts and trailers.

Etch It is also great around the home and is perfect for priming the following surfaces:

  • Roofing and spouting
  • Gutters
  • Plumbing
  • Ducting
  • Outdoor fixtures
  • Hinges
  • Fences and gates
  • Air conditioning
  • Refrigeration units

Etch primers are perfect for the priming of all types of metalwork that require a quick turnaround. Due to the restrictive recoat window (24 hours), it may be difficult to use an etch primer on larger jobs.

Etch primers only require a very thin coat in order to etch the metal surface and create a tenacious bond – that’s why an aerosol spray is the best form of application, although it can be brushed or rolled.

Due to its fast-drying nature – Etch It is cured within an hour – it is perfect for jobs that require a quick turnaround.

Etch primer FAQs

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions we get about the use of etch primer.

Is etch primer necessary?

Depending on the job at hand will depend on whether an etch primer is necessary. There are other primers available that may be more suitable to the job so it’s always best to speak to a specialist who will be able to advise you on the best primer for the job you are carrying out.

Can you paint straight over etch primer?

While the purpose of an etch primer is to “rough up” the surface to create a better bond for the paint, some people do like to sand the surface once the etch primer has been applied to create the best possible foundation. You can then paint straight on top of an etch primer.

Can I spray etch primer over rust?

While etch primer won’t prevent rust, it will stop any existing rust problem from getting any worse so etch primer can be sprayed over rust once you have removed any loose flakes first to create a smooth surface.

How long should you leave the etch primer before painting?

All etch primers are different, but CRC Etch It is touch dry in 20 minutes and fully cured in one hour. You should wait a minimum of one hour and a maximum of 24 hours before you paint over etch primer.

How do you apply etch primer?

Again, all etch primers are different, however CRC Etch It comes in a handy aerosol that makes it easy to apply. There is no need for additional mixing or chemical additives and there is no clean-up needed.
